Michelle McCool Reveals Undertaker’s Heart Scare Before WrestleMania
WWE Hall of Famer Michelle McCool recently shared that her husband, Mark Calaway, known as The Undertaker, faced a serious health challenge leading up to WrestleMania 41. Calaway underwent heart surgery the morning after the event, McCool revealed on the Six Feet Under podcast.
McCool described the difficulty of maintaining composure during the tense period. She noted the support from well-wishers, saying she was frequently enough on the verge of tears due to Calaway’s heart issues, discovered “by the grace of God.” The surgery took place at 6 a.m. the day after thay returned from WrestleMania.
The former Women’s Champion detailed her struggle, especially with Calaway’s desire to keep the situation private. McCool recounted a hospital stay two weeks before WrestleMania, emphasizing the fear and her focus on getting Calaway the best care. She said that without timely intervention, the outcome could have been dire, according to his doctor.
The health scare came to light after McCool scheduled a heart scan for calaway in January. Despite an initial refusal in March,McCool insisted on further evaluation when his resting heart rate was around 140. This led to a diagnosis of chronic atrial fibrillation (AFib), undetected due to the absence of typical symptoms. Medication failed, leading to an emergency room visit where his heart’s ejection fraction was found to be just 30 percent.
Despite a cardioversion procedure, the condition returned. Calaway, maintaining his professional demeanor, attempted to proceed through WrestleMania weekend, but McCool remained concerned due to his fluctuating heart rate and low blood pressure. Fortunately, McCool reports that The Undertaker is now recovering well after surgery and medical care, addressing his atrial fibrillation (AFib).
“I think it’s significant for people to no some of the details… The day we got home from WrestleMania, the next morning at 6 a.m., we were at the hospital for heart surgery.”
