Ken Anderson, known to many as Mr. Kennedy, recently shared a captivating story about a wrestling match with The Undertaker that went horribly wrong – not due to in-ring work, but because of a completely unresponsive crowd. The incident, which occurred during a 2007 house show in Portugal, offers a rare glimpse behind the curtain and reveals even a legend like The Undertaker can face nights where connecting with an audience proves impractical.
A Silent Night in Portugal
During a recent appearance and discussion on his new podcast, Mic Check, Anderson recounted the frustrating experience. He and The Undertaker were in the midst of a feud and performing their usual house show routine, a formula that had consistently drawn positive reactions. However, the Portugal crowd remained eerily silent.
“One of the worst that I was ever a part of was with ‘Taker,” Anderson began. “We were in, I want to say it was Portugal, in like 2007. We were right in the middle of our feud, and for whatever reason, they were just silent.”
Anderson detailed how their usual signature spots - moves designed to elicit a pop from the audience – fell completely flat.He specifically recalled a spot where The Undertaker would feign going for his “Old School” maneuver, allowing Anderson to cut him off.”I remember, you know, normally, ‘Taker would grab my hand, and he would start backing up towards the ropes, like he was going to go up for Old School.and they’d start to come up, and then I’d cut him off and stop it,” he explained. “And whatever we did, they didn’t react to it. Because we worked every, you know, we were working four nights a week for several months, and it was pretty much the same formula to the match every time.”
“These People Suck” - A Rare Moment of frustration
After several minutes of wrestling in front of a completely silent audience, The Undertaker made the unusual call to abruptly end the match. “I remember I covered him at one point, and he was like, ’Let’s just f-ing go home. Like, these people suck,'” Anderson recalled. “And then we,you know,f-ing went to the back.”
The story highlights a rarely seen moment of frustration from The Undertaker, a performer renowned for his professionalism and dedication to captivating audiences. It’s a testament to the importance of crowd reaction in professional wrestling and how even the most skilled performers can be affected by a lack of engagement.
Anderson emphasized the valuable lesson he took away from the experience. The Undertaker advised him, “Sometimes you just gotta, like, wrap it up and you just gotta take the loss. You know, you can’t win ’em all.” This pragmatic approach underscores the veteran performer’s understanding of the unpredictable nature of live events and the need to adapt.
The Importance of Reading the Room
This incident serves as a reminder that professional wrestling is a collaborative art form. While wrestlers deliver the physical performance, the audience provides the energy and reaction that truly brings a match to life. A silent crowd can be incredibly demoralizing, even for seasoned veterans. Understanding how to “read the room” and adjust accordingly is a crucial skill for any performer. Sometimes, the best course of action is to acknowledge the lack of connection and move on, preserving the integrity of the show and the performers’ energy for future events.
