Bratislava Teams Up with UNDP to Transform Cities Across Europe and Central Asia
Istanbul, Türkiye – December 5, 2024 – In a move to bolster urban growth across Europe and Central Asia, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the City of Bratislava have inked a four-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership, coordinated through UNDP’s Istanbul regional Hub, aims to tackle pressing urban challenges through innovative solutions, knowledge sharing, and collaborative governance.
“This partnership marks an importent step in our regional approach to urban development challenges,” said steliana Nedera, Manager of UNDP’s Istanbul Regional Hub. “By collaborating with the City of Bratislava, we can leverage shared expertise and experiance to develop solutions that will benefit cities across Europe and central Asia, fostering innovation and sustainable development throughout the region.”
The collaboration will focus on several key areas, including:
Improving City Services and Management: Streamlining city operations and enhancing the delivery of essential services to residents.
Digital conversion: Creating digital tools to empower residents with easier access to services and increased participation in city decision-making.
Innovative Financing: Exploring alternative and innovative financing mechanisms to support groundbreaking urban projects.
Crisis Response: strengthening cities’ capacity to respond effectively to crises and emergencies.* Designing Public Spaces: Creating inclusive and sustainable public spaces that cater to the needs of all generations.Beyond these specific areas, the partnership will foster a vibrant network of knowledge exchange between cities across the region. This will involve organizing events,workshops,and collaborative initiatives to share best practices and develop innovative solutions to common urban challenges.

The partnership also emphasizes strengthening local crisis response capabilities and promoting inclusive urban development that addresses the needs of all generations. Special attention will be given to creating sustainable environments that prioritize children’s safety and family well-being, ensuring cities become more resilient and livable for all residents.
This agreement builds on UNDP’s longstanding collaboration with the Ministry of finance of the Slovak Republic, which has facilitated knowledge-sharing in public finance management and supported innovative urban governance models and alternative financing mechanisms across the region since 2009.
