Originating from Ponorogo Regency in East Java, Reog Ponorogo is more than just a performance; it’s a reflection of the region’s history and cultural values.
According to folklore, the art form dates back to the 9th century AD during the Kediri Kingdom. Legend has it that King Prabu Klana Sewandono, known for his wisdom and fairness, fell in love with Princess Songgolangit from the Kingdom of kediri.
To win her hand in marriage, the king had to present a unique performance unlike any other. His advisor, the bright and magical Patih Pujangga Anom, devised a plan. he utilized the captured King Singo Barong, a fearsome tiger-headed creature with a peacock perched on top, and incorporated it into a grand procession accompanied by traditional music.
This innovative performance, known as Reog, captivated Princess Songgolangit and secured the king’s victory.
