UNHCR⁣ Forced to Cut Staff as Refugee Numbers Soar

Updated June 17, 2025
⁣

The United Nations high Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is implementing significant staff reductions, including⁤ nearly half of all senior positions at its Geneva headquarters adn regional offices. This restructuring comes as the agency grapples with severe funding shortfalls amid⁣ an unprecedented surge in ⁣the number of refugees worldwide. The UNHCR’s commitment to refugee protection remains, even with fewer resources.

Approximately 3,500 permanent ‍staff positions have been‍ eliminated, along with hundreds of temporary ⁤roles. ‍Some offices have been downsized or closed as ⁣part of the ‍cost-cutting measures. The UNHCR’s financial assistance programs will be impacted by the cuts.

Despite these cutbacks, the agency said it‍ is prioritizing operations in regions with the⁣ most pressing refugee needs. The UNHCR is working with partners to streamline operations and use technology to improve ⁢efficiency⁤ in refugee assistance.

The announcement follows a March⁣ warning from the UNHCR about the devastating impact of funding cuts on millions of refugees. The agency anticipates its⁢ available funding will be⁢ at the same level as a decade ago, despite the number of refugees ‍having nearly doubled to over 122 million.

Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, acknowledged the difficult situation. “In light of difficult financial realities, UNHCR is compelled to reduce the overall scale of⁢ its operations,” Grandi said. “We will focus our efforts on activities that⁣ have the greatest impact‍ for refugees supported by streamlined headquarters and regional bureau structures.”

Despite prioritizing ‍critical needs, key programs such as financial aid, health, education, and sanitation will be considerably affected. ⁢The UNHCR is collaborating with⁣ UN partners, aid organizations, and host countries ⁤to lessen the impact on those who depend on its support.

“Even as we face painful cuts and lose so many dedicated colleagues, our commitment to refugees⁣ remains⁢ unshakeable,” Grandi said.⁣ “Even though resources⁢ are scarcer and‍ our capacity to deliver is reduced, we will continue to work hard to respond to emergencies, protect ⁤the rights of refugees ⁣and pursue ⁣solutions.”

What’s next

The UNHCR will continue to coordinate with⁤ its partners to mitigate the impact of the ‍cuts and explore new, more efficient ways to deliver⁢ aid to refugees worldwide.‍ The agency⁣ will also focus on advocating for⁤ increased funding to address⁢ the growing global‍ refugee crisis.
