Union Hockey Advances to Quarterfinals, Shutouts Brown 9-0 & Faces Princeton
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The #20 Union College men’s hockey team delivered a dominant performance Saturday evening, dismantling Brown University 9-0 at M&T Bank Center. The victory, marking the most goals scored by the program in an ECAC Hockey Tournament game, propels Union into the quarterfinals where they will face Princeton University in a three-game series beginning at 7 p.m.
The win secures Union’s second consecutive quarterfinal berth and showcased a remarkable defensive consistency. The Garnet Chargers have now recorded three consecutive shutouts against the Bears, outscoring them 16-0 over that stretch. Sophomore goaltender Cameron Korpi was instrumental in the defensive effort, registering his fifth clean sheet of the season and second in a row. Korpi’s performance also established a new program record for the longest individual shutout streak, going 153 minutes and 48 seconds without conceding a goal, surpassing Colin Stevens’ previous record of 140 minutes and 40 seconds set in 2014.
While Korpi expertly handled 22 shots, the Union offense proved relentless, firing a season-high 59 shots on goal – the most since 2012. Senior Parker Lindauer led the team with 10 shots and contributed three points to the offensive outburst.
Lindauer was one of four Garnet Chargers to register three points on the night. Senior Colby MacArthur and sophomore Lucas Buzziol each tallied two goals and an assist, while sophomore Ben Muthersbaugh added two assists to his 19th goal of the season. MacArthur has been particularly productive recently, amassing 17 points in his last 11 games.
Buzziol opened the scoring at 8:19 of the first period, igniting the sold-out crowd. Lindauer, MacArthur, and Buhr all found the back of the net in the second period, with MacArthur’s goal coming on the power play. Union’s penalty kill was also effective, successfully neutralizing two Princeton power plays and extending their streak to six games without allowing a power-play goal, having killed off 16 consecutive penalties over that span.
The Garnet Chargers exploded for five goals in the final period, sealing their playoff victory. Senior Ethan Benz scored his first goal of the season during the offensive surge, while Muthersbaugh and Buzziol both capitalized on power-play opportunities. Senior Nate Hanley assisted on both man-up goals, bringing his career point total to 97 and leaving him just one assist shy of tying Jason Walters and Brett Supinski for eighth-most career assists in Union’s Division-I history.
Union’s four power-play goals marked their highest total in a game since converting four against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on .
