Unión Magdalena Seeks Promotion to Colombia’s Top Division
Can unión Magdalena Escape Relegation Hell?
Villavicencio, Colombia – The Unión magdalena soccer club has endured a nightmare since their relegation on October 21st, 2023. This Saturday, they have a chance to awaken from that nightmare and reclaim their place in Colombia’s top division.
The “Ciclón Bananero” will face Llaneros in the second leg of the Torneo de Ascenso final at Villavicencio’s Estadio Bello Horizonte-Rey Pelé. Unión enters the match with a slim 1-0 advantage from the first leg played in Santa Marta.
A draw will be enough for unión to secure promotion. A one-goal loss woudl send the series to a penalty shootout, where the winner ascends. If Llaneros wins by more than one goal, they will be crowned champions and Unión will face real Cartagena in a relegation playoff.Adding another layer of complexity, if Unión wins the championship in regulation or extra time, llaneros will also be promoted due to their superior performance in the overall reclassification standings.
This will be the fourth meeting between Unión Magdalena and Llaneros in the past two weeks. The first two encounters were part of the Torneo de Ascenso II final, with unión winning 4-0 at home and the second leg ending in a 1-1 draw in Villavicencio.
“We won 1-0, it’s not ideal, we would have liked to win by 2-0 or 3-0, but it wasn’t possible,” said Unión Magdalena coach Jorge Luis Pinto after the first leg. “We have one game left and we’re going to go for it. It’s going to be a tough match, just like the one in Santa Marta.”
The crucial match will be officiated by renowned Colombian referee Wílmar Roldán.
