United for a Cleaner Tomorrow: The Power of Collective Sewerage System Maintenance

United for a Cleaner Tomorrow: The Power of Collective Sewerage System Maintenance

September 14, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

Protecting Our Sewage ‍System: A⁤ Collective Responsibility

As we approach the⁣ last quarter⁤ of the year, it’s essential ⁢to remind ⁢ourselves of the importance of looking after our sewage system. With the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) predicting a 30% increase in rainfall, we must take precautionary measures to mitigate the risks of flooding and ensure the mobility of ⁢our city.

The misuse of sewers is a primary cause of flooding, as waste and ⁢certain substances clog pipes and ducts. According to Hemel Adolfo Serna, head of EPM’s Wastewater Networks Maintenance Unit, there are simple yet effective ways to make a difference. Here are five recommendations to help ‍you contribute to a safer and more sustainable sewage system:

5 Simple Ways to Protect Our Sewage System

  1. Proper ‌Toilet Use: Avoid throwing papers, sanitary napkins, condoms, tampons, diapers, cigarette butts, or any solid products down the toilet.
  2. Dispose of Oily Liquids Responsibly: Store oily liquids in containers and take them to designated points for public cleaning services.⁢ Avoid⁤ throwing them down the ⁣ducts of your house.
  3. Responsible Construction Practices: Ensure that construction site materials‍ are not washed down sewers, as this‌ can cause blockages.
  4. Protect Drains and Roads: Don’t throw rubbish on ⁣the roads, as it can clog drains. Use mesh over drainage grates on roads in the paving⁤ process to prevent material from falling into the ducts.
  5. Proper Kitchen Waste Disposal: Collect kitchen waste in a crate and recycle it correctly. Avoid throwing it down the drain.

If you notice any damage to a drain ‍or sewer, report it to the EPM Helpline at 604 4444 115. Our maintenance team will be ready to assist you.

Remember, looking ⁣after the sewage system is everyone’s responsibility. By working together, we can make ‌a significant⁤ difference‌ and reduce the risk of flooding in our homes and on city roads.
