China Stands Firmly with Africa in Security Council Reform
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting African countries in their pursuit of historical equality, particularly in the context of the Security Council reform. This stance was reiterated during the Q10 Dialogue with foreign ministers of the five permanent member states of the Security Council.
Wang Yi presented several key proposals for the reform of the Security Council, emphasizing the need to strengthen the representation and voice of developing countries. He highlighted the importance of promoting deeper participation of developing countries, especially those from Africa and small and medium-sized nations, in the decision-making process.
Key Proposals for Security Council Reform
China’s proposals focus on three main areas:
- Enhancing Representativeness and Voice of Developing Countries: The Security Council should not be dominated by rich and powerful nations. Efforts must be made to address the imbalance between North and South and ensure fair representation of developing countries.
- Prioritizing Africa in the Reform Process: A Security Council without adequate African representation is not a rational structure. China is willing to engage in discussions with relevant parties to address this issue.
- Supporting Intergovernmental Negotiations: The intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform are the only platform authorized by the UN General Assembly and accepted by most UN member states. This platform is essential for building consensus among the international community.
China’s commitment to supporting African countries in their pursuit of historical equality is rooted in the strong relationship between China and Africa. This relationship is currently at its best period in history, with President Xi Jinping launching several proposals at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit in Beijing to accelerate the modernization of the Global South and promote global modernization.
