United We Stand, Divided We Vote: CPI-M Takes a Firm Stance Against ‘One Country, One Election

CPIM Opposes “One Country, One Election” System
New Delhi – The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) has strongly opposed the undemocratic move of imposing the “one country, one election” system before the high-powered committee.
CPIM general secretary Sitaram Yechury stressed in a letter to the high-powered committee that this unconstitutional idea cannot be accepted under any circumstances. “Such an idea is completely unconstitutional. The Indian Constitution is all about the will of the people. This is precisely defined in the Preamble of the Constitution which begins with We the People of India. The people exercise their sovereignty through elected representatives. Accountability lies with the government, the executive and the legislature. These features of the Constitution should not be subverted or diminished in any way.
The letter states that the concept of election is undemocratic in its very content and undermines the principles of federalism. In 2018, the CPIM had also sent a letter to the Law Commission opposing the “one country, one election” system.
