15th General Assembly of the African Broadcasting Union (AUB): A Milestone for African Media
Between 02 and 06 September 2024, the 15th General Assembly of the African Broadcasting Union (AUB) took place in Gaborone, Botswana, under the theme “The future of African media in the face of the challenges of new technologies and climate change.”
This meeting was marked by strategic discussions for the future of African media, focusing on the integration of new technologies and addressing climate change.
Main Axes of the Gaborone Meeting
1. The Executive Council (02 September 2024)
The AUB Executive Council opened the Gaborone meeting on 02 September 2024, announcing two important initiatives:
- Launch of Africa Artificial Intelligence Observatory: This observatory, located at the AUB, aims to monitor, analyze, and predict the effects of artificial intelligence on African media, promoting the integration of new technologies in the continent’s media while considering local realities.
- Continued operation of the AUB Foundation for the Fight against Cancer: The Council instructed the Director General of the Union, Mr. Grégoire Ndjaka, to continue implementing this foundation, launched in March 2024 in Cameroon, to intensify the fight against cancer, which affects almost a quarter of the African population.
2. The General Assembly (September 3-4, 2024)
The General Assembly saw a strong African and international presence, highlighting the growing importance of the AUB on the global media scene. During this session, six new members were officially integrated:
- China Media Group (CMG)
- Voice of America (VOA)
- Russia Today (RT)
- China National Radio Television (NRTA)
- SPUTNIK
- MUSLIM TELEVISION ASSOCIATION
These new memberships strengthen the AUB network and open new perspectives for international cooperation in the media.
The AUB Awards
An awards ceremony honored Africa’s best media productions and innovations, recognizing outstanding initiatives in the fields of journalism, technological innovation, and content production dealing with climate and environmental issues.

The Chairman of the Executive Council of the AUB warmly thanked the people of Botswana and its President, His Excellency MOKGWEETSI MASISI, for the organization, the quality of the welcome given to the participants, and the efforts made to ensure the success of this major event for the media sector in Africa.
The 15th General Assembly of the AUB in Gaborone was a great success, marked by the arrival of new members from several continents, including America and Asia, testifying to the growing influence of the AUB.
This General Assembly was a great opportunity to strengthen the media of the world and those of Africa.
