What the New Regulations Entail
The new regulations apply to mains adapters and power supplies up to 240 watts.Crucially, all such adapters will be required to feature at least one USB Type-C connection. Furthermore, the use of detachable cables will be mandatory, ensuring greater flexibility and reducing the need for consumers to purchase a unique charger for each new device. This standardization will promote interoperability across a broad spectrum of electronics.
The legislation covers a wide array of devices, including smartphones, tablets, e-readers, cameras, headphones, portable gaming consoles, and computer mice. Laptops are also included, though they have a longer transition period due to differing power requirements and technical complexities.
Boosting Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
Beyond universal connectivity, the new norms introduce stricter energy efficiency requirements.New standards for efficiency under part-load conditions will be implemented for power supplies exceeding 10 watts. This aims to minimize energy losses when devices are plugged in but not actively charging, contributing to long-term environmental sustainability.
The European Commission estimates that this policy will reduce the energy consumption of external adapters by approximately 3% by 2035. To put this in outlook, this energy saving is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of roughly 140,000 electric cars according to the European Commission.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
The environmental impact extends to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, projected to decrease by 9%, and pollutant emissions, expected to fall by 13%.Consumers are also expected to benefit financially, with estimated annual savings of around 100 million euros as stated by the Commission.
The reduction in e-waste is a key driver of this legislation.Currently, consumers generate over 11,000 tonnes of electronic waste annually from discarded chargers in the EU according to the European Parliament. The new standard is expected to significantly curb this figure.
