Universal Genève, the historic Swiss maison known as Le Couturier de la Montre (the watch couturier), officially returned to the luxury market on April 8, 2026. The relaunch marks the revival of a brand that was a defining force in 20th-century watchmaking, blending technical precision with a high-fashion aesthetic that earned it its couture moniker.

The return is led by Georges Kern, who also serves as the head of Breitling, and is backed by Partners Group. The brand is re-entering the industry with a comprehensive strategy that includes the opening of a flagship store on Rue du Rhône in Geneva, the same location where the company was headquartered during its mid-century peak between Rolex and Patek Philippe.

A Strategic Multi-Collection Launch

Rather than a gradual introduction, Universal Genève has launched four distinct collections simultaneously to demonstrate the breadth of its current vision. According to reporting from Revolution Watch, Georges Kern stated that this deliberate decision allows the brand to immediately showcase the full breadth and versatility of Universal Genève through a curated offering produced in limited quantities.

A Strategic Multi-Collection Launch

The new structure of the brand is divided into the following categories:

  • Prêt-à-Porter Collection: This line features reimagined icons, including the Polerouter Date 39mm in blue, the Compax with a signature panda dial on a brown bund strap, and the Cabriolet in black featuring a sculptural 18K rose gold nine-row bracelet.
  • Capsule Collection: A series of limited-edition pieces.
  • Couture Creations: Unique pieces developed in collaboration with various artisans.
  • Signature Timepieces Collection: Reinterpreted creations from the brand archives produced for a limited time.

In addition to these collections, the brand has introduced a new family of watches called the Disco Mini, while rebooting other historic lines such as the Disco Volante, Dioramic, and Cabriolet.

The Return of Design Icons

Central to the relaunch are the Polerouter and the Compax, two models that remain deeply embedded in watch and style culture. The Polerouter was designed in 1954 by a then 23-year-old Gérald Genta to commemorate the first flight by Scandinavian Airlines between Copenhagen and Los Angeles over the North Pole. The design is noted for its twisted lugs, crosshair dial, and architectural balance.

The Compax chronograph is similarly tied to mid-century style, specifically through its association with Nina Rindt. The Finnish fashion model and wife of Formula 1 driver Jochen Rindt became a style icon in the 1960s, and photographs of her wearing the panda-dialled chronograph helped cement the watch’s status as a cultural symbol.

Historical Context and Revival

Founded in 1894 by Numa-Émile Descombes and Ulysse-Georges Perret, Universal Genève established a reputation for technical ambition, particularly through the pioneering of micro-rotor movements in the late 1950s. These innovations allowed for the creation of super-slim automatic dress watches, further aligning the brand with the principles of couture—where mechanics serve the overall design.

Despite its influence from the 1940s through the 1960s, the brand faced a decline and had effectively disappeared by the early 2000s. The current revival follows a three-year period of preparation by Kern and Partners Group, which included the release of tribute pieces in 2024 and 2025. These included an anniversary trio for the Polerouter in 2024 and a homage to the Nina Rindt Compax in 2025.

Now, the sleeping beauty of watchmaking is awakened, opening a new chapter in the long history of one of watchmaking’s most beloved names.

Georges Kern

The brand’s return on April 8, 2026, aims to regain the influence it once held as a leader in high-end Swiss watchmaking, positioning itself once again as the intersection of technical mastery and aesthetic sensibility.
