Universal Quantum Links Small Chips to Solve Scalability
Founded in 2018 by Professor Sebastian Weidt and Professor Winfried Hensinger of the University of Sussex, Universal Quantum builds systems designed to solve scalability issues by linking many small advanced quantum chips together. As detailed in the sources, this modular approach uses patented interconnect technology and advanced integrated chips to achieve high qubit counts without relying on photonic interconnects or costly lasers and cooling infrastructure.

Each chip utilizes trapped-ion technology, where charged atoms are held in place by electric fields to act as qubits.
Universal Quantum’s modular architecture addresses the hardest challenges in scaling ion trap systems. Quantum is a global race, and we are pleased to back a team with genuine standing across Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America.

Universal Quantum Expands Globally with DLR Contract
Universal Quantum is currently delivering against a $77 million contract with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Main Sequence Managing Partner Bill Bartee noted that the company has established a paying customer base of demanding scientific and government institutions before most competitors have shipped working hardware, according to the sources.
The newly raised capital will fund the establishment of a permanent research and development center in Singapore—the company’s first outside Europe—alongside operations in the United States, Japan, and Hamburg, Germany. Lazard, Inc. acted as the exclusive financial advisor for the transaction.
