Universal Pictures has confirmed a major shift in its upcoming blockbuster release schedule, moving the next installment in the “The Mummy” franchise to October 15, 2027, while pushing “Miami Vice ’85” to May 19, 2028.
The swap exchanges the original dates previously assigned to both films, with “The Mummy” moving up from its planned May 2028 slot and “Miami Vice ’85” delayed from an August 2027 release.
According to Universal’s announcement, the new “The Mummy” film will be directed by Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz reprising their roles as Rick and Evie O’Connell.
Meanwhile, Joseph Kosinski will direct “Miami Vice ’85,” which stars Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs and Austin Butler as Sonny Crockett. The film is being produced by Dylan Clark and Dylan Clark Productions, with Dan Gilroy writing the screenplay based on the original series created by Anthony Yerkovich.
Universal also confirmed that an untitled Universal event film will be released on August 6, 2027, the date previously held by “Miami Vice ’85,” while an untitled Blumhouse project has been moved to October 8, 2027, to accommodate the shift.
The studio emphasized that both films are being prepared for IMAX presentation in theaters, underscoring their status as major theatrical events.
Sean Daniel, a veteran producer of the “The Mummy” franchise, is set to produce the new film alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment. Brendan Fraser, Jason F. Brown of Hivemind, and Denis Stewart will serve as executive producers.
For “Miami Vice ’85,” Sara Scott and Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the project as Executive Vice President and Creative Executive of Production Development at Universal, with Jay Polidoro and Jacqueline Garell handling production oversight.
The revised schedule positions “The Mummy” for a fall release, aligning with the traditional horror-adjacent window that has historically performed well for genre films, while “Miami Vice ’85” moves into a prime summer slot ahead of Memorial Day weekend in 2028.
Universal has not announced any changes to the creative teams or casting beyond what was previously disclosed, and no plot details for either film have been released at this time.
