The Peruvian Torneo Apertura is underway, and defending Liga 1 champions Universitario de Deportes have confirmed a significant change to their roster ahead of both domestic and Copa Libertadores commitments. Midfielder Esteban Cruz Varona will spend the 2026 season on loan at Unión Comercio of the Segunda División.

The move, announced by Universitario via their official ‘X’ account, is designed to provide the 19-year-old Cruz with increased playing time. Competition for midfield positions at Universitario is fierce, with Jairo Concha, Martín Pérez Guedes, and Jesús Castillo firmly established as first-team regulars. The club stated, “Our defender Esteban Cruz Varona will play on loan at Unión Comercio for the 2026 season. Show your claw, Esteban!”

Cruz, who can play as a defensive midfielder or centre-back, joined Universitario in 2024. While he maintains a contract with the club through December 31, 2026, the loan to Unión Comercio means he will not feature for Javier Rabanal’s squad in Liga 1 or the Copa Libertadores during the current campaign, unless Universitario recall him mid-season.

Contract Details and Future Prospects

Despite the loan, Cruz remains under contract with Universitario until the end of 2026. In other words he will become a free agent at the close of the year, potentially opening the door for a move to another club should Universitario not offer him a contract extension. The club will have the opportunity to re-evaluate his progress during his time at Unión Comercio and decide whether to retain his services beyond 2026.

International Experience

Cruz has also represented Peru at the youth level, earning 10 caps for the Under-20 national team. He will be hoping to impress during his loan spell and potentially earn a call-up to the senior national team under coach Mano Menezes. Increased playing time in the Segunda División will be crucial for his development and chances of breaking into the full national squad.

Universitario have already been active in the transfer market for 2026, appointing Javier Rabanal as their new head coach following the departure of Jorge Fossati. Rabanal arrives with a strong reputation after leading Independiente del Valle to the Liga Pro title in Ecuador. The club is also reportedly seeking to add a foreign striker to their ranks, according to Álvaro Barco, the club’s sporting director.

Alongside Rabanal’s arrival, Universitario have confirmed several other personnel changes for the 2026 season. Incoming players include Javier Rabanal (coach), Diego Romero (goalkeeper), Caín Fara (defender, from Argentina), and Sekou Gassama (forward, from Senegal). Departing players include Sebastián Britos (goalkeeper), Gabriel Costa (forward), Diego Churín (forward), Jorge Fossati (coach), and Jairo Vélez (midfielder, to Alianza Lima). We find also rumors surrounding Rodrigo Ureña potentially leaving the club, and Michael Hoyos possibly joining.

The loan of Esteban Cruz represents a strategic decision by Universitario to provide a young player with valuable experience while maintaining a competitive squad for their Liga 1 and Copa Libertadores campaigns. The club is clearly focused on building a team capable of challenging for a fourth consecutive league title and making a significant impact on the continental stage.

As of today, February 4, 2026, Universitario are preparing for the challenges ahead, with Javier Rabanal at the helm and a mix of experienced players and promising young talents like Cruz – albeit on loan – aiming to continue the club’s recent success.
