University of Alabama to Build High-Performance Computing Center
The University of Alabama (UA) will construct a high-performance computing (HPC) and data center on the eastern side of its campus. The University of Alabama Board of Trustees has approved the project, which is set to begin construction soon. The center is expected to be completed by late 2026.
The new HPC will be the fastest computing system in Alabama and will compete with systems at peer research institutions. It will feature approximately $25 million in computing power and will provide cloud storage options for research partners.
This facility will support research across the entire University of Alabama System and encourage collaboration with external partners. It aims to enhance infrastructure for research and workforce development.
The HPC is anticipated to attract leading faculty members, improving education and drawing high-achieving students. It will facilitate partnerships with industry, government, and academic sectors, promoting economic growth and advancing research in areas such as water, materials, transportation, health, national security, and quantum computing.
Funding for this project primarily comes from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology. Additional funding comes from Alabama’s Education Trust Fund, approved by the state legislature and signed by Governor Kay Ivey in 2023.
The HPC will be a petascale system, capable of executing quadrillions of calculations per second. It will be the first system in Alabama to qualify for the Top500 list, which ranks the nation’s high-performance supercomputers.
With a size of 40,000 square feet, the facility will significantly boost UA’s computing capabilities. This modern infrastructure will help UA researchers compete for federal and private grants.
The center will benefit all disciplines at the university, integrating technology into the education framework. It will develop a skilled workforce to support Alabama’s economic development in the 21st century.
