University of Hawai’i Athletics Names Joshua Walker New Head Coach

HONOLULU – University of Hawai’i Athletics Director Matt Elliott announced Friday the selection of Joshua Walker as the fourth head coach of the Rainbow Wahine women’s volleyball program. The decision marks a significant milestone for the Hawaii volleyball community, as Walker returns to his alma mater after a successful stint as an assistant and associate head coach at Baylor University.

Walker, a 1999 graduate of the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, was officially introduced during a press conference held at the SimpliFi Arena on June 5, 2026. His appointment follows a comprehensive search process led by Elliott, who emphasized Walker’s deep ties to the university and his proven ability to develop championship-caliber teams.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Joshua Walker back to the University of Hawai’i to lead our Rainbow Wahine volleyball program,” Elliott stated. “Joshua embodies the very best of Hawai’i volleyball tradition and knows firsthand what it takes to win at the highest level here. His deep roots in our community, combined with his proven championship pedigree as an athlete and coach and passion for his alma mater, make him the perfect person to lead this program.”

Walker’s coaching career has spanned over a decade, with notable achievements at both the collegiate and national levels. As an assistant coach for the Rainbow Warriors, he contributed to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and helped establish a winning culture that laid the foundation for his future success. His tenure at Baylor saw him rise to associate head coach, where he played a pivotal role in guiding the Bears to 10 consecutive NCAA Tournament berths by the 2025 season.

“I feel extremely blessed and thankful for this opportunity,” Walker said during his introductory remarks. “I’d like to thank Matt for all his diligence in making this happen, and (UH President) Wendy Hensel for her support. I’d also like to thank my wife, the rest of my family, and friends who have helped me be ready for this opportunity. Hawai’i has been home for a while, but I love that it gets to be our workplace again. I’m excited to get going and will work to make this program truly one of a kind.”

The 46-year-old coach brings a unique blend of experience as both a player and a coach to the position. As a student-athlete at Hawai’i, Walker earned All-American honors and was part of the team that captured a national championship as an assistant coach. His playing career was marked by leadership and versatility, traits he aims to instill in his current roster.
