Unleash Hell’s Fury: A Scorching Review of Shadow of the Damned: Hella Remastered

In 2011, a crazy game was released. The people behind the game are three well-known figures in the Japanese gaming industry, namely Goichi “Suda51” Suda, Shinji Mikami and Akira Yamaoka. Suda has the most twisted brain of the three, as he’s responsible for wacky games like No More Heroes, Killer 7, and Lollipop Chainsaw, while Shinji Mikami has made games with broader appeal, like Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, and Devil May Cry. Akira Yamaoka is the musician on the team responsible for almost all the soundtracks for the Silent Hill games, but also for all the spin-off rhythm/dance games Lollipop Chainsaw and Persona 4: Dancing All Night.

As you may have guessed, the crazy game is Shadows of the Damned, an action game that on paper shouldn’t work, but it does. It was also originally published by Electronic Arts, who clearly weren’t afraid to step outside of their comfort zone at the time. You always run a risk in games involving Suda51, as it can go in unexpected directions – and that’s certainly the case with Shadows of the Damned.

It’s a third-person action game, and Japanese developer Grasshopper Manufacture (led by Suda51) describes the game as “An action-adventure journey through Hell” set in a whimsical Hell + Rock themed world. – It’s a long and complicated description, but I myself can’t describe it any other way.

You play as Mexican Garcia Hotspur, a tacky demon hunter who wears a purple leather jacket with a “Kill me”belt buckle, he does not hesitate to blow off the heads and various limbs of various demons and monsters while screaming at them.

It all starts to get a little sad when Garcia finds his girlfriend Paola hanging in their bedroom, and before he knows it, the room is filled with monsters, the ruler of hell, the ugly six-eyed Fu Laming, he drags her to hell and makes her his lover. Of course, the hot-blooded Garcia didn’t do that, so he decided to bring back the love of his life and finish off Fleming.

Johnson is much more than just an awkward sidekick, as he plays a very central role in the game. Jensen can become three different weapons at any time; a semi-automatic revolver, a machine gun and a rifle. Now three fairly traditional weapons on paper might not seem like much, but like everything else in Shadows of the Damned, nothing is what it used to be, so these are no ordinary weapons.

A great example of these weapons, as well as the game’s generally cheesy childish humor, is the revolver called the Boner, which when upgraded throughout the game will be called The Hot Boner and The Big Boner – the latter of which has a mini The complete the game is built around it, a kind of porn version of Las Vegas. You have to be prepared for this kind of thing. The other two weapons are equally creative, and even though there are only three weapons in the game, their upgrades are so extensive that they almost feel like new weapons every time they are updated – and often they do.

Time has not been kind to Shadows of the Damned. The weapons are still good, but the rest of the game feels stiff and clunky and the camera can be a little choppy at times. However, the good light/dark mechanics keep some parts of the gameplay fresh to this day. Parts of Hell, where the game takes place, are shrouded in black fog and you shouldn’t stay longer than necessary. Garcia’s energy bar continues to drop while you’re in the fog and the demons are invulnerable inside, so it’s pure survival when you’re shrouded in the fog. However, there are times when it is necessary to enter the fog, as some doors can only be opened by interacting with certain switches that can only be activated from inside.

However, the fog can be cleared by shooting a concentrated ball of light at the goat’s head, which is usually hanging somewhere in the fog (typical Suda51 logic) or by lighting some pyrotechnic machines to clear the fog. This light and dark mechanic means more to the game than it initially seems, as it adds a layer of strategy to an otherwise relatively simple shooter that is so over-the-top in places that it becomes almost absurd and downright absurd, but that’s expected from Suda51 games .

Because when he is involved, things are not as you expect: for example, you don’t find the key to the closed door, but eyes, brains or strawberries, which you have to stick on the closed door. The crying child’s mouth opens them. Checkpoints are bats that release glowing poop when the checkpoint is activated, and the game’s merchant is a ten-foot-tall human-monster hybrid that regurgitates items purchased from him. Throughout the game you’ll travel through twisted villages, strange libraries, magical labyrinths and something of a Monty Python style shooter. Yes, there are a lot of bells and whistles.

The graphics have a unique style, and with violence, naked women, and symbols everywhere, it’s not a great game, nor was it when it was released in 2011. Given that this is a remaster rather than a remaster, it’s pretty much the graphics original we get here, upscaled to 4K and aiming for 60fps, but it doesn’t always hit that target.

One of the game’s strong points is its excellent soundtrack. Akira Yamaoka’s soundtrack is made up of a variety of strange, bizarre and brilliant songs that span a variety of genres and fit perfectly with the game and help emphasize its unique style. The voice acting is also excellent, with Steve Blum (Star Wars Rebels, God of War, Call of Duty) as Garcia and Greg Ellis (Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Trek) as Jason. Paul Messier (God of War, Resident Evil, Lord of the Rings) plays Fleming, while Julianne Bushell (Star Trek, Silicon Valley) plays Garcia’s girlfriend, Paula.

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered is a great remaster at an affordable price, costing less than £20. The graphics have been upscaled to 4K and includes four new costumes for Garcia, and this remaster also has a New Game+ mode. You might want a more complete remaster, but the game doesn’t get better with age and was created by someone with a very twisted brain, so it’s far from everyone’s cup of tea.

The gameplay barely manages to stay afloat thanks to the light/dark mechanics that add a layer of strategy, but the almost childish style might be too much for some. However, like most remakes, this one is probably aimed primarily at those who really liked the original – they get what they expected.

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered is a remastered version of one of the craziest games ever made, and will likely reach new players who will have an experience they’ve never had before, which can only be a good thing – as I said Having said that, its price is very reasonable.
