Unleash the Beast: McLaren GTS Takes it Up a Gear with 15hp Boost and 10kg Weight Loss – A Thrilling Ride that Defies Speed Limits
McLaren GTS Review: A Refreshed Grand Tourer
Enhanced Performance and Reduced Weight
The McLaren GT, launched in 2019, was designed to increase profitability and expand the brand’s user base. However, sales have not met expectations, with the 720S/750S and 570S/600LT/Artura currently outselling it.
To boost sales, the model has been revamped, with a new name, GTS, and several key updates. The GTS will be available in fall 2024, featuring a more powerful engine, reduced weight, and refreshed styling.
Visually, the changes are subtle, with the satin chrome trim replaced by black accents and slightly more pronounced air intakes. Carbon fiber options are also available, as seen on the test vehicle.
The 4.0L V8 twin-turbo engine now produces 635hp, a 15hp increase from the previous model, and transmits power to the rear axle. Maximum torque remains at 64.1kg-m, while the car’s weight has been reduced by 10kg.
A Practical McLaren with a Twist
Despite having the lowest maximum power output of any current McLaren, the GTS boasts a better power-to-weight ratio than many rivals. The chassis is made of carbon fiber, and the suspension features adaptive dampers.
Inside, the GTS offers a unique blend of performance and practicality. The large luggage compartment under the glass hatch remains, making it an ideal choice for those who want to carry golf club bags or other bulky items.
McLaren GTS (UK spec)However, the GTS’s ingress and egress can be challenging, particularly for taller individuals, due to the high side sills. While this may be a drawback for some, existing GT customers seem to prioritize the car’s unique features over ease of access.
The cabin’s controls and infotainment system are distinct from those found in other McLaren models. The 7.0-inch touch monitor is relatively small, and smartphone mirroring is not supported, even with a wired connection.
The powertrain and handling mode selector, a rotary knob, is easy to use but may seem outdated compared to more modern controls.
A Refreshing Driving Experience
The McLaren GTS offers a unique blend of natural grip and refreshing agility, making it an exciting choice for those who value performance and practicality.
