Embracing Timelessness: Drucker’s Key to Innovation
Peter Drucker, a renowned business administration expert, left an indelible mark on Japanese business leaders through his 39 books, including ”Management” (Diamond Inc.). In this series, Yasushi Isaka, co-chair of the Drucker Society, explores Drucker’s concept of “timelessness” and its significance in today’s rapidly changing world, highlighting its connection to future innovation.
Unlocking the Mindset for Innovation
In this installment, we delve into the mindset required to harness change and drive innovation.
Embracing Change as a Natural Process
Drucker’s words offer valuable insight: “The principle of entrepreneurship is to accept change as natural and healthy.” (Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Diamond Publishing, 1985)
While we intellectually acknowledge that change is inevitable, we often resist it. Change can be daunting, and our natural response is to cling to familiarity. However, Drucker suggests that change should be utilized, or “used,” to our advantage.
This perspective shift can be liberating. Drucker’s approach is action-oriented, focusing on practical application rather than philosophical or ideological debates. By adopting this mindset, we can transition from mere observers to active participants, driving innovation forward.
In essence, innovation is an attitude that involves intervening in situations, taking calculated risks, and embracing uncertainty. It’s about plunging into the unknown and navigating its challenges.
