Celebrating 29 Years of Survival Horror: The Original Clock Tower Game
Back in the days of Famicom and Super Famicom, creating a horror game was a challenging task due to the limitations of the technology and the creativity of the development team. However, one of the first horror games to hit the market was Clock Tower, a game that revolutionized the genre.
Clock Tower is a series of survival horror video games that utilized the Point & Click system, which involved moving the mouse cursor to command the character to walk or pick up objects in a 2D side view. This innovative system was a novelty at the time and contributed to the game’s massive success.

The inspiration for the first Clock Tower game came from the horror film Phenomena by Italian director Dario Argento. The game’s creator, Hifumi Kono, wanted to pay tribute to Dario’s films and created a game that would evoke fear and pressure on players. The game tells the story of Jennifer Simpson, an orphan who is adopted by a wealthy man named Simon Barrow, who lives in a mansion known as the Clock Tower.
The gameplay involves Jennifer walking and running, although running causes her health to deteriorate. Players must find hiding places throughout the mansion and use quick reflexes to escape from the killer. The game features nine possible endings, adding to its replay value.

Clock Tower received positive reviews from critics, with Famitsu giving the Super Famicom version a high score of 31 out of 40. The game’s graphics and sound were praised for creating an eerie atmosphere, and its unique gameplay design was commended.
For those interested in playing the original Clock Tower game, a re-release titled Clock Tower Rewind is available, which features added cutscenes and the same gameplay system. The game is available on all devices except mobile phones, and players can use the mouse to control it on PC.
