Unleashing the Siren: Mae West, the Seductive Icon Who Revolutionized Hollywood

October 29, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Entertainment

This is People America Time, where we listen to the stories of people who played an important part in history that led to today’s America. This is Noh Si-chang. This time, we will learn about Mae West, who was called the heroine of American movies and drama stages.

Mae West was a Hollywood actress. West was a writer, film producer, and successful businessman. Her sexual appeal as a woman and her art were free-spirited, and her way of thinking was often controversial. Mae West’s laugh-out-loud jokes have made her an important part of American pop culture.

Mae West was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1893. My father, John West, was a man who worked several jobs. My mother was Matilda. Matilda gave her daughter a lot of support in making her a celebrity. During her days as a child, May joined a local theater group and became a child actor. In 1907, May joined a vaudeville troupe that toured the country. Vaudeville was a show that mixed comedy, singing, and dancing and was very popular in the United States in the early 1900s.

Mae West began appearing on the Broadway stage in New York when she was nearing the age of 18. May has appeared in several musical shows, including “Hello Paris” and “Alla Broadway.” For about 15 years, May sang and danced on Broadway and in vaudeville.

In the mid-1920s, Mae West produced her own dramas, writing scripts and acting in them. From this point on, May began creating sex-themed comedies, which earned her a reputation. At the same time, it also put May in trouble. May’s first Broadway drama was titled ‘SEX’.

This work was very popular. However, soon after, the show had to be stopped. The New York City police found the show immoral and imprisoned May for more than a week. Mae West knew this would make her a national celebrity, and it soon did. A visit to prison did not quell the controversy surrounding West’s production or its sexual content. Mae West said she learned a lot from her time in prison. May said that through the people she met there, she discovered elements that bring out the personalities of the characters in her works.

Mae West has written many different plays. Her humor had a lot of sexual content. However, it always had two meanings. Her language was humorous yet intelligent. May made people laugh by exaggerating her sexual nature. She also always took on the role of a young, strong woman. And it had to be your main role. May wanted people to know she was the star and the mastermind behind the show.

One of her most famous plays was “The Diamond Reel.” While writing the script, Way paid great attention to making this work popular with a wide range of audiences. Way performed this piece at the famous Bowery in New York City.
The audience knew the history of the area. May set the scene here in the 19th century. May thought that period clothing suited her tall height and attractive figure. She was confident that older audiences would enjoy the throwback to that era. The female audience seemed to like her colorful outfits. It seemed clear that young people would like the actors’ movements and sexy style.

West played the role of Lil, a singer who works at a salon. He was the main character of the drama. Singer Lil walked around the salon wearing a tight, shiny dress. Lil’s head was bouncing with bright yellow hair. She was wearing a large hat and diamond jewelry. The main character had many lovers and many people approached her. This work was a huge hit. This play was performed on Broadway over 300 times. The main character of this work, Lil, was the most representative character played by Mae West. It was a role that May would repeat several times throughout her life. Diana Neal was a leading lady herself in several of May’s productions, but her real life was also similar.

When the stock market crashed in the United States in 1929, Mae West also faced difficult times. There were not many theaters that were able to remain open during the severe economic depression. West was also embroiled in a legal battle over the subject matter of his work. His latest Broadway musical production was also not successful. And in 1930, he suffered the sorrow of his mother passing away. West had to make a change.

In 1932, Mae West went to Hollywood, California to pursue a career in film. Her first appearance was in “Night After Night.” May initially refused to appear in the role because she did not like it. The producer then gave May permission to revise the story. May turned it into something with special humor and joy.

The following year, she appeared in the movie “She Done Him Wrong.” The film was an adaptation of the successful play The Diamond Reel. But making it into a movie wasn’t easy. The Hayes Office, which oversees the ethics of American films, has put the brakes on several of West’s films. To make a movie, the title and cast of the work had to be changed. Mae West used her brain to change sexual language in a way that was acceptable to the Hayes office. Rather than using straightforward sexual language, it is changed to humor that conveys the meaning.
In this film, Cary Grant plays Captain Cummings, Mae West’s love interest. For Cary Grant, this film was one of his earliest appearances. Grant then emerged as a huge Hollywood star. Mae West, who played the role of Captain Cummings’ lover Lady Rowe in the movie, became a famous line. This is the scene where Lady Rowe seduces Captain Cummings.

LADY LOU: “You know, I always did like a man in a uniform. That one fits you grand. Why don’t you come up sometime and see me…I’m home every evening.”
CAPTAIN CUMMINGS: I’m busy every evening.
LADY LOU: “Busy? So what are you trying to do, insult me?”
CAPTAIN CUMMINGS: “Why no! Not at all. I’m just busy, that’s all. You see, we’re holding meetings in Jacobsen’s Hall every evening. Anytime you have a moment to spare, I’d be glad to have you drop in. You’re more than welcome.”
LADY LOU: “I heard you. But you ain’t kidding me any. You know, I’ve met your kind before. Why don’t you come up sometime, huh?”
CAPTAIN CUMMINGS: “Well, I…”
LADY LOU: “Don’t be afraid, I won’t tell. Come up, I’ll tell your fortune.”

This movie was a huge success. “Why don’t you come up and see me sometime” This phrase has become the most famous catchphrase in American film history. At one time, Mae West was the highest-paid entertainer in America. Some experts say her films saved Paramount Pictures, which was collapsing due to financial difficulties. Movie fans almost all over the world either loved or hated the rambunctious Mae West. There was no middle ground.

Mae West also wrote and starred in the next film, “I’m No Angel.” West played the role of a circus star. As always, the main character drove the man crazy. As soon as the film came out, This was the theme song sung by Mae West in the film, attracting more viewers than any other film up to that time, and earning more admission fees.

In the 1930s and ’40s, Mae West continued to make films, and there were many problems along the way. Film critics say this was Mae West’s golden age. After that, there were mostly rehashes of what had come before. Whenever I was asked to star in a movie, I turned down the roles of older or weaker women. Mae West also performed on stage, wrote books, and appeared on television.

When she was 85 years old, Mae West appeared in a musical comedy called “Sextette.” Here, she played a sexy woman that men couldn’t resist. Some critics didn’t praise the film, but others said she was the best. Two years later, Mae West passed away at the age of 87 at her home in California.

Mae West was one of the most renowned and progressive actresses in American film and television history. She became a new style Hollywood star with her yellow hair, pretty voice, and slim body. Her independent, humorous and sexy style continues to have a profound influence on performers today.

This time, we introduced actress Mae West, who made new history in Hollywood.
