Unlikely Gesture of Unity: Harris and Trump Put Differences Aside at 9/11 Memorial Service
23 Years Since 9/11: Harris and Trump Unite at Memorial in New York
September 11th marked 23 years since the devastating September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. Traditional memorial ceremonies were held in New York and other locations to honor the victims and their families.
In a rare display of unity, Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican candidate former President Donald Trump attended a ceremony in New York, where they shook hands in front of prominent politicians, including President Joe Biden.
Trump was accompanied by Republican vice presidential nominee Senator J.D. Vance and his sons, while Harris participated in memorial services at Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon, alongside President Biden.
The September 11, 2001 attacks were a pivotal moment in modern history. Militants affiliated with the Islamic militant group Al Qaeda hijacked four American passenger planes, resulting in catastrophic consequences. Two planes flew into the World Trade Center in New York, one into the west wall of the Pentagon outside Washington, and the fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers resisted the hijackers.
The attacks resulted in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives, excluding the 19 alleged hijackers. This tragic event remains the deadliest on American soil since the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941.
The aftermath of the 9/11 attacks led to the US “war on terror” and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, forever changing the global landscape.
