City University of Hong Kong and the University of Cambridge have collaborated to launch the first scholarship program to fully fund students to study a one-year full-time master’s program in the UK. The government is committed to promoting Hong Kong to become an international hub for post-secondary education and also encourages institutions to strengthen cooperation with overseas universities. CityU and Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge will support up to 20 students with full scholarships each year to study one-year master’s programs in Cambridge. The program lasts for five years, with a total annual funding amount of approximately HK$10 million. Applicants must choose Lucy Cavendish College as their first choice, with priority given to students from disadvantaged groups. The scholarship has started accepting applications and will close in April next year. The two institutions also collaborate on the Future Global Leaders Program to provide scholarship recipients with training on sustainable development solutions. CityU pointed out that it does not require relevant students to return to Hong Kong to work after graduation. City University President Mui Yin-cheong said: “Hong Kong should be confident that we can attract people to come and that our students can also play a role in the world. I don’t think this plan requires students to return to Hong Kong. They can bring glory to Hong Kong around the world.” ” Lucy Cavendish College stated that as Sino-British relations become increasingly tense, the academic circles of the two places need to strengthen cooperation. Madeleine Atkins, Dean of Lucy Cavendish College at the University of Cambridge, said: “When there are more conflicts in the world than there were 20 years ago, it is even more important for global universities like Cambridge and CityU to remain open and allow students to understand people from different backgrounds. Students with different backgrounds and political systems learn to understand and respect each other. We provide an environment for them to make friends and build professional networks, so that we can alleviate those tensions.” She also said that the scholarship program will be considered to cover PhD students in the future. degree students.
