Unlock Brain Power: Discover How Daily Physical Activity Boosts Mental Health

Unlock Brain Power: Discover How Daily Physical Activity Boosts Mental Health

November 26, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

According to a new study from Penn State College of Medicine, everyday physical activity can enhance cognitive processing speed. Activities like walking or doing household chores can make a person feel as though they are four years younger in terms of mental sharpness.

The study showed that middle-aged individuals who engaged in simple movements experienced immediate benefits, regardless of the activity’s intensity. Whether it was light activities like walking the dog or more vigorous exercises like jogging, the improvements were significant.

Jonathan Hakun, an assistant professor at Penn State, highlighted that physical activity doesn’t always require a gym visit. Any movement contributes to a healthy lifestyle and positively affects cognitive health.

This research used smartphone technology to interact with participants throughout their daily lives. Over nine days, participants checked in six times daily, reporting on their physical activity. Following these check-ins, they completed cognitive tasks that measured processing speed and working memory.

The study included 204 participants from the Bronx, aged 40 to 65. All participants had no history of cognitive impairment, and half were Black or African American, with 34% identifying as Hispanic.

Key findings indicate that participants who reported being active within the last 3.5 hours showed processing speed improvements akin to being four years younger. While working memory did not show similar gains, reaction times correlated with the improvements in processing speed.

Hakun noted that these findings suggest that regular physical activity may enhance cognitive health. He believes that even a short walk can provide a cognitive boost.

Future research may combine daily activity assessments with monitoring tools to explore the long-term effects of physical activity on cognitive health. The goal is to understand how much movement, its frequency, and timing impact cognitive outcomes over time.

This study was published in the journal Annals of Behavioral Medicine. The research team included experts from various institutions, highlighting a collaborative effort to advance understanding in this area. Funding came from the National Institute on Aging.
