Unlocking the Potential of AI in the Workplace
At Dreamforce 2024, Salesforce’s largest annual global IT conference, Slack CEO Dennis Dresser highlighted the importance of integrating AI into workflows to boost productivity and efficiency.
This year’s Dreamforce 2024 focuses on the integration and innovation of AI within the Salesforce ecosystem, including Slack, MuleSoft, and Agentforce.
During Slack’s keynote speech, the future of human-centered agent-based work was discussed, and Slack’s research on AI’s work effectiveness and Slack’s performance were shared.
According to Slack’s research, 41% of working hours are spent on routine tasks, and 70% of corporate applications are disconnected. The introduction of AI can streamline workflows and improve productivity.
As Salesforce’s solutions, which incorporate real AI, are connected to each other, synergy effects are being created. For example, Slack’s role as a conversational interface has expanded to include integration of customer relationship management (CRM) data, facilitating a 47% increase in productivity through Slack workflows and connecting 43 backend applications.
With Salesforce Channel and AgentForce integrated into Slack, the work environment is shifting to a more collaborative and efficient one.
The Future of Work: How AI Will Change the Way We Work
Slack CEO Dennis Dresser delivered a positive outlook on how AI will change the way we work in a panel discussion on the future of AI.
She described today’s work environment as “broken” and said work time is being used inefficiently. According to her, “41% of working hours are spent on work for work.” This ‘work for work’ refers to wasteful tasks such as finding or organizing information needed to perform important original tasks.
CEO Dresser suggests AI as a way to solve this problem and emphasizes that AI should be introduced in a way that can directly help in the flow of work.
Slack is already integrating AI in a variety of ways. Dresser explains that “AI should not be something that you just find and use in isolation, but should be a friend and advocate that helps you in your work flow.”
The design principles of Slack AI include “Don’t make me think” and “Be a great host,” and are intended to make users feel more natural and direct about AI as a tool for assistance.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing AI Adoption
But AI adoption also comes with challenges. Dresser said that companies need to acknowledge that using AI can be uncomfortable or negatively perceived by employees.
“A lot of people are uncomfortable with using AI,” she said, and leaders need to step up and build trust in using AI to address this.
To achieve this, leaders need to be open about how they use AI and show how it works naturally in their everyday work.
Slack itself is taking a very strategic approach to embedding AI into its workflows. “Slack is not just a platform, we’re building a ‘Work Operating System’ that unifies all people, data, applications, and work flows,” Dresser explained.
The system is designed to put AI at the center of work, allowing employees to get help from AI without having to find separate tools.
She said, “AI is no longer a ‘nice to have’ but a must-have,” and warned that companies that do not adopt AI will fall behind the competition.
