This is especially noticeable in men.

A study published in Affective Science found that suppressing positive emotions lowers well-being. But the good news is that people suppress negative emotions more often than positive emotions.

Researchers from National Taiwan University and Northwestern University conducted a series of three studies to investigate whether the tendency to suppress negative and positive emotions is due to personal characteristics and how this tendency is associated with various aspects of well-being.

In the first study, researchers examined three data sets containing data from 479 young adult participants, including responses to the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, an assessment of emotion regulation strategies, and various measures of well-being.

The second study analyzed two data sets from culturally different contexts. One data set came from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS), and the other came from the Pittsburgh Cold Study, which examined the effects of exposure to cold viruses in a sample of healthy American adults. The data set also included responses to an emotion regulation questionnaire and various measures of well-being.

In the third study, 250 American and 205 Taiwanese participants were assessed on the same emotion regulation as the previous study.

Studies have shown that individuals tend to suppress negative emotions more often than they suppress positive emotions. Additionally, suppressing positive but not negative emotions was associated with lower well-being. Suppression of negative emotions did not. The results were the same for both Taiwanese and American participants.

Study author Dr. Chen Wei Yu explained, “Suppressing only positive emotions but not negative emotions was predicted to lead to lower well-being.”
