On November 1, Christians of the Eastern rite celebrate the Day of the Moneyless Workers and the Miracle of Kuzma and Demyan. On this day, believers honor the memory of the Christian martyrs Cosmas and Damian.

The history of the holidays

Saints Cosmas and Damian were born in Arabia to a Christian family. They studied the art of divination in the Aegean port city of Cilicia (modern Türkiye). They lived in Cyrus in Syria in the 3rd century.

Their parents Cosma and Damian taught them to love their neighbors and God. They carried their faith in God through their lives, until their death.

Cosma and Damian were talented doctors who did not charge for their work. For this they were called penniless. They treated everyone, paying special attention to the poor.
