Program Overview and Objectives
The Salk Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (Salk SURF) is a 10-week paid supervised research internship program that provides world-class research facilities, practical training to learn and develop research skills, a network of mentors, and foundational experiences for interested or students actively considering careers in STEM.
The mission of Salk Surf is to expand opportunities for summer research experiences that inspire and help students discover their strengths and explore research, academic, and career possibilities. Our vision is that by participating in the program, students will build relationships and confidence to persist through the science training and workforce pipeline.
Salk SURF provides travel and transportation to and from the Salk Institute, accommodations, and a competitive full-time hourly wage.

Eligibility requirements:
Applicants must:
- Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program.
- Be entering your junior or senior year when entering the program.
*If you are a graduate of a two- or four-year institution, please consider applying to one of our open positions. - Have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- Ability to adhere to program dates and requirements; this includes, but is not limited to, not taking summer courses or participating in other internships while attending Salk SURF.
- Eligible to work in the United States.

selection process
- Applications will be reviewed by December.
- Candidates will be notified of selection in January.
- Selected candidates will then be invited to interview with a prospective lab panel based on their ranked preference for available summer research projects.
- Selected candidates will receive an invitation letter with internship details and laboratory placement notification.
