Unlocking a Sustainable Future: Rep. Yongman Kim Leads the Charge in ‘AI+X Engineering for Net-zero City’ International Seminar
On the 29th of last month, Democratic Party of Korea member Yongman Kim (Gyeonggi Hanam-si Eul, Political Affairs Committee) held the ‘AI+X Engineering for Net-zero City, Korea/Singapore International Seminar’ in the 2nd small conference room of the National Assembly Members’ Hall.
Since ChatGPT was announced in November 2022, major countries have been fiercely competing for AI leadership. As the use of AI in daily life rapidly increases, it is accelerating innovation across our industries and fundamentally changing every corner of society.
The AI industry is also a huge challenge in terms of energy and environment. This is because the power consumption of ‘data centers’, which are essential brains for AI learning and operation, is enormous. It has already been announced that the amount of power consumed by AI worldwide is similar to the power consumption of a small country, and there is also a forecast that it will increase by 2.5 times by 2050.
Accordingly, the AI+X Engineering for Net-zero City, Korea/Singapore International Seminar was organized to discuss ways to achieve carbon neutrality while promoting the development of the AI industry, focusing on the establishment of the “Hanam Gyo-san AI/Data Education and Research Innovation Cluster” by inviting not only domestic experts but also experts from the National University of Singapore.
The first part of the seminar will feature presentations on the following topics: △Hanam Gyo-san Public Housing District Project Overview and Self-Sufficient City Creation Plan (Choi Seung-cheol, Team Leader, Hanam Project, Korea Land and Housing Corporation); △Hanam Gyo-san AI/Data Education and Research Innovation Cluster Creation Plan (Jeon Kyeong-hwan, Director, Digital Twin Center, POSTECH Artificial Intelligence Research Institute); and △Pursuing the Net Zero Target (LAM Khee Pho, Professor, National University of Singapore). This will be followed by discussions with officials from the Ministry of Science and ICT, Gyeonggi Province, and Korea Land and Housing Corporation.
In the second part, presentations were given on the topics of △Hanam Gyo-san AI/Data Education Research Innovation Cluster Construction Plan (General Architecture Office DM) and △Achieving Net-Zero Data Centers: Strategies, Technologies, and Implementation (Professor LEE Poh Seng, National University of Singapore), followed by a discussion with representatives from Gyeonggi Housing & Urban Development Corporation, Aegis Asset Management, and Hanwha Engineering & Construction.
“We are facing the significant challenge of advancing the AI industry and achieving carbon neutrality in the era of artificial intelligence,” said Rep. Kim Yong-man, who co-hosted the international seminar with Pohang University of Science and Technology and the National University of Singapore. “We expect the ‘AI/Data Industry Innovation Cluster’ currently being promoted in Hanam Gyo-san to become the backbone of our country’s AI industry and a model for carbon neutrality.”
