On September 9, 2024, the 7th (77th) expert forum of 2024 was held in the 517 conference room of our institute. Professor Tom Stafford from the University of Sheffield, UK, was invited to give a special report on “Experimental Exploration of Scientific Research Funding”. The report meeting was hosted by Deputy Director Chen Haipeng (in charge of work).
Professor Stafford’s presentation utilized big data visualization analysis to discuss key aspects of funding decisions, including how to evaluate funding areas and objects, factors that impact the accuracy of funding decisions, and strategies for making more informed funding choices. He also shared his comprehensive understanding and insights on scientific research funding, drawing from years of theoretical research and practical experience.
Following the presentation, our researchers engaged in in-depth discussions with Professor Stafford, exploring the differences in scientific research funding sources between China and the UK, and their impact on research funding approaches.
About Professor Tom Stafford
Professor Tom Stafford holds a PhD in cognitive neuroscience and is a professor at the University of Sheffield, UK. As an expert in cognitive science, his research focuses on learning and decision-making, with particular emphasis on risk and bias management, skill learning, and complex decision-making processes. He serves as deputy editor-in-chief of The Psychologist magazine and has worked as a freelance writer and researcher for the BBC.
