Thailand and the UK Strengthen Trade Partnership
Thailand and the UK have taken a significant step in strengthening their trade cooperation. Minister Phichai and British Trade Minister Douglas Alexander signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement in Bangkok, pledging to eliminate trade barriers in 20 industries and accelerate the negotiation process of the free trade agreement.
The MOU aims to deepen cooperation in key areas such as agriculture, digital, education, and tourism. This agreement is expected to boost trade between the two countries and promote economic growth.
The UK is currently Thailand’s 22nd largest trading partner in the world and the fourth largest in Europe. The total bilateral trade volume in 2023 was US$6.74061 billion, with Thailand having a surplus of over US$1.4 billion with the UK. The annual export volume reached over US$4 billion.
Thailand’s main exports to the UK include chicken, automobiles and spare parts, jewelry, and other products. Meanwhile, the UK’s main exports to Thailand include machinery and equipment, alcoholic beverages, circuit boards, and medical equipment.
The strengthened trade partnership between Thailand and the UK is expected to create new opportunities for businesses and investors in both countries. With the elimination of trade barriers and the acceleration of the free trade agreement negotiation process, the two countries are poised to increase their trade volume and promote economic growth.
