Paul Mescal‘s Transformation for Gladiator II

Paul Mescal, the 28-year-old Irish actor, underwent a significant physical transformation for his role as Lucius in Gladiator II. He shared that intense training sessions left him feeling strong, stating he felt his body “could inflict real damage.” His workouts included sessions with a fitness coach, horseback riding, and fight training.

Role Background

In Gladiator II, Lucius is a grown man living in Numidia, a region in northern Africa. After being sent there as a child, he returns to Rome to reunite with his mother, leading to conflict.

Training Regimen

Mescal had no prior experience with bodybuilding. He believes his background in Gaelic football helped him during the audition process. His training focused on fight choreography to develop a gladiator-like physique, rather than creating a stereotypical Hollywood look.

He worked extensively with personal trainer Tim Blakeley and followed a nutritional plan. Mescal explained he had the freedom to eat a variety of foods, including burgers and chips, to support his training efforts.

Physical Training Insights

His workout routine included weight lifting and resistance training. He often performed exercises such as dumbbell shoulder raises, which helped build strength through progressive overload. Personal trainer Robert Utley detailed the importance of balancing push and pull movements in strength training.

During filming, Mescal was advised to limit running to concentrate on muscle building. He has often shared his enjoyment of physical activities like boxing and walking.

Co-stars’ Praise

Paul’s dedication did not go unnoticed by his co-stars. Pedro Pascal nicknamed him “Brick Wall Paul” due to his impressive strength. Joseph Quinn described him as a “unit,” highlighting his commitment to the role’s physical demands.
