Unlocking the Power of Data: Exclusive Lecture Series by Seijo University’s Data Science Education and Research Center
Walk around Seijo Manba – Ancient Japanese literature x data science initiatives -”
Date and time: Friday, November 22, 2024 18:00-19:10 Online (ZOOM)
We will hold an educational lecture titled “Walking around Seijo Manya – Ancient Japanese Literature x Data Science Initiatives -” hosted by the Data Science Education Center of Seijo University (Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, President: Yoshiyuki Sugimoto) on Friday, November 22, 2024.
The Kobayashi Seminar in the Department of Japanese Literature, Faculty of Arts and Sciences (supervisor: Professor Mayumi Kobayashi) collaborates with the Data Science Education and Research Center to implement PBL (Project Based Learning)-style classes that integrate the arts and sciences.
In this lecture, the students of the Kobayashi seminar, who usually specialize in ancient Japanese literature such as Man’yoshu, will try to combine data science skills and knowledge of ancient Japanese literature by creating and working on a three-dimensional digital space (metaverse space). I will give a lecture.
The material used was the “Manyo Uta Plates” installed on 15 trees on the Seijo University campus. In 2018, Professor Kobayashi took the lead in installing plaques that selected trees that appear in waka poems included in the Man’yoshu and inscribed with the waka poems and the names of the poets.
In this PBL-style class, we are creating an initiative in which avatars can move around the campus in a three-dimensional digital space while reading the Manyoka plate and its explanatory text.
The students spent about two months writing explanatory notes on the waka poems, taking photographs that will serve as materials for the space, and creating the three-dimensional digital space.
The experience of relating data science to ancient Japanese literature, which at first glance feels like completely different fields, will help students develop their ability to convey the appeal of the Japanese literature they are majoring in in an easy-to-understand manner to others through digital skills. Ta.
JP UNIVERSE, which has an educational and research cooperation agreement with the Data Science Education and Research Center, will provide technical guidance on digital space creation. Thanks to https://www.jpuniverse.com/ for their cooperation.. In addition to this initiative, we are collaborating with the company in a variety of other situations, including cooperating with workshops and educational lectures hosted by the Data Science Education and Research Center.
