Supporting Mental Health in Children: Kochi Prefecture’s Initiative
As summer vacation comes to an end, a new school term begins, and it’s a critical time to pay attention to children’s mental health. Kochi Prefecture has launched an innovative initiative to support junior and senior high school students under the age of 18, providing a safe space for them to open up and receive help.
Kochi Teens Base: A Collaborative Effort
Kochi Prefectural Kokoro Education Center has teamed up with Kochi Prefectural University to create “Kochi Teens Base,” a unique space where students can interact with peers of similar age. This initiative is characterized by the active participation of 12 students from the Faculty of Social Welfare, who will work alongside the center’s staff to respond to users who are struggling in school.
A Safe Space for Students
Located in the Community Collaboration Building on the Eikokuji Campus of Kochi Prefectural University, Kochi Teens Base offers a range of activities, including games, hobbies, and study support. Students can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, take walks around the campus, and spend time at their own pace. The facility will be open every Friday afternoon, starting from September 6th, and users can access it after a brief interview, trial, and registration process.
Prioritizing Mental Health
As the new school term begins, it’s essential for parents and caregivers to be aware of the warning signs of mental distress in children. Kochi Prefecture emphasizes the importance of paying attention to these signs at home to ensure children receive the support they need.
Additional Support Services
In addition to Kochi Teens Base, the prefecture operates “Kokoro Online Support,” a service that provides learning support to elementary, junior high, and high school students who are unable to attend classes in person. This service aims to ensure that all students have access to the resources they need to succeed.
