Unmasking the Source: How Wuhan’s Market and Unlikely Animals Sparked the COVID-19 Pandemic
COVID-19 Origin Traced to Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, China
Study Confirms Animal Origin of COVID-19
A study has found that the epicenter of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that broke out in China at the end of 2019 was ultimately the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan.
An international joint research team, including the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and researchers from the University of Arizona in the United States, announced the results of their research in the international academic journal ‘Cell’.
Debate Over COVID-19 Origin
There has been a debate in the academic world about how the COVID-19 pandemic began. Many researchers claim that it originated in bats, as have many other pathogens that have emerged in humans.
However, there has been a lack of strong evidence for an intermediate animal that transmits infection between bats and humans. This has led some researchers to claim that the virus was intentionally or accidentally released from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.
Wild Animals Sold at Huanan Market
The research team explained that wild animals such as raccoons, civets, and bamboo rats, which were previously identified as vectors of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the cause of COVID-19, were sold at the Huanan Market in Wuhan, China at the time.
The virus, which initially originated from bats, spread to humans through these animals.
Genome Analysis of Samples
The analysis found that the COVID-19 virus was found in the area selling wild animals, including raccoons and civets, in the market.
These animals were also identified as vectors for the coronavirus that caused the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003.
Evolution of the Genome
The research team also analyzed the evolution of the genome of the original COVID-19 virus reported at the beginning of the pandemic.
They analyzed whether genes that were ancestral to the virus that most likely infected humans were discovered before COVID-19.
Prevention of the Pandemic
Based on the results of this study, scientists diagnosed that the coronavirus pandemic could have been prevented in China at the time.
Jack Hensel, a professor at the University of Nova in Lisbon, Portugal, pointed out that “if there had been simple infection prevention equipment, the entire pandemic could have been prevented.”
Risk of Future Pandemics
There have also been concerns that human-wildlife contact could increase the risk of a pandemic.
Michael Worobey, a professor at the University of Arizona, said, “We have analyzed the data collected by the Chinese CDC in a new and rigorous way and confirmed that it is consistent with other evidence pointing to the origin of the pandemic,” and warned, “If humans come into contact with wild animals carrying viruses, a situation like the COVID-19 pandemic could occur again.”
