Unpacking the Shocking Claim: Do Immigrants Really Eat Cats and Dogs
Trump’s Immigration Claims: Separating Fact from Fiction
Did Trump Really Say Immigrants Eat Cats and Dogs?
Former U.S. President Trump sparked controversy during a debate with Kamala Harris when he claimed that immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating cats, dogs, and local people’s pets. This statement became a major focus of the debate, with Harris responding that Trump was being “extreme.”
According to reports from the Associated Press and the New York Post, Trump specifically mentioned the immigration problem in Springfield, Ohio, during the debate. He stated, “They’re eating dogs, they’re eating cats, they’re eating the locals’ pets.” Harris laughed and responded, “You’re being so extreme.”
After the debate, Trump’s deputy, JD Vance, was asked by reporters about Trump’s remarks. Vance defended his boss, saying that he had received a report from a Springfield resident earlier that day that immigrants were catching geese in a local pond and “slaughtering them and killing them.”
When asked about the claim that immigrants were eating dogs, Vance said he was not sure which animals were eaten in Springfield, “but I know there were geese.” He added that they had received reports from some constituents that their pets were kidnapped by some of the immigrants.
Vance emphasized that the argument about what animals are eaten is just a blurred focus, and the more important issue is that due to Harris’s policies, 20,000 immigrants have poured into Springfield, and now local people cannot afford basic supplies, food, and housing prices.
The Origins of the “Immigrants Eating Cats and Dogs” Rumor
The rumor that some immigrants in Springfield eat pets, cats, and dogs originated from a post that went viral on the X platform. The post attached a photo of a black man holding what looked like a Canada goose. The post claimed that a neighbor reported that someone’s cat was missing and was finally found hanging on a tree at the home of a Haitian immigrant neighbor. The immigrants allegedly cut the cat into pieces and ate it. The post also claimed that immigrants eat dogs and ducks and geese in the park.
The post has been viewed 4.8 million times so far. Vance retweeted the post but later said that these rumors may be false.
Official Response to the Claims
In response to the claim that Haitian immigrants eat cats, dogs, and other pets, Springfield city official Bryan Heck issued a statement emphasizing: “There are currently no credible reports or specific accounts indicating that pets have been endangered, harmed, or abused by immigrants.”
Springfield has a population of about 60,000, but in the past four years, the city’s Haitian immigrant population has surged from 5,000 to 20,000.
