Qu Zimo: A Beacon of Confidence and Sunshine in Adversity
On the evening of September 2, Beijing time, Chinese disabled athlete Qu Zimo from Hebei made history by defeating the No. 1 seed, 45-year-old Korean veteran Choi Jung-wan, 2:0 to win the gold medal in the men’s singles WH1 final of the Paris Paralympic badminton event.
Prior to this, Qu Zimo and his teammate Mai Jianpeng defeated the Korean combination Zheng Zaijian/Yu Xiurong in the men’s doubles WH1-WH2 final and won the gold medal. For Qu Zimo, both finals were title defenses, and he achieved his wish of increasing his total Paralympic gold medals to four.
Qu Zimo is from Quxizhang Village, Zhao County, Shijiazhuang City. Despite his physical disability, he did not bow to fate. Training for athletes is tough, and training for disabled athletes is even tougher. However, Qu Zimo’s passion and determination made him persist.
Qu Zimo’s coach, Qu Fuchun, from the national and provincial teams, prefers to show the public Qu Zimo’s happy, confident, and sunny side. “Qu Zimo is the ‘happy guy’ in our team, he is quite naughty,” said Qu Fuchun.
Qu Zimo’s positive attitude and sense of humor have made him a beloved member of the team. He often makes his teammates laugh with his jokes and antics, which helps to lighten the atmosphere during intense training sessions.
Qu Zimo’s hard work and dedication have paid off, and he has won many championships in major domestic and international competitions. He was also awarded the title of “Best Male Athlete with Disabilities in 2019” by the World Badminton Federation.
