Pep Guardiola recently signed a two-year contract extension with Manchester City. He has been the manager since the summer of 2016 and has made significant changes to the team.

Under Guardiola, Manchester City has won six Premier League titles in eight seasons, including four consecutive titles, a first in English football. The club now has more titles in those eight years (six) than in the previous 87 seasons (four).

The 2022/23 season was particularly impressive as City achieved a historic treble by winning the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FA Cup. They are the second English club to secure this treble, following Manchester United in 1998/99.

Guardiola’s first season ended without a trophy. However, he rebounded in 2017/18 with a record-breaking campaign. That year, City became the first team to reach 100 points in the Premier League and scored 106 goals in a season.

Most Points in a Premier League Season

  • Man City: 100 points (2017/18)
  • Liverpool: 99 points (2019/20)
  • Man City: 98 points (2018/19)
  • Liverpool: 97 points (2018/19)
  • Chelsea: 95 points (2004/05)

In 2018/19, City also won the FA Cup, completing a domestic treble.

During Guardiola’s tenure, he has secured 232 wins from 315 matches, a winning rate of 73.7%. This rate is higher than Sir Alex Ferguson’s 65.2% and Jurgen Klopp’s 61.4%. Guardiola averages 2.35 points per match, the best among managers with at least 20 matches in the league.

Guardiola’s Manchester City has achieved notable defensive records as well, with 135 clean sheets, outpacing Liverpool’s 128. The team has earned 739 points in his 315 matches, surpassing the 738 points they collected in the 424 matches before his arrival.

Notably, Guardiola has faced 33 different clubs in the Premier League and has yet to beat Middlesbrough, with two draws in their encounters. West Ham has struggled the most against City, winning only two points from 17 meetings.

Nuno Espirito Santo will face Guardiola on December 4, hoping to match the record of wins that only a few other managers share against him. Guardiola’s six Premier League titles place him second in history, tied with Bob Paisley and George Ramsay.
