A Record-Breaking Discovery

American scientists have made a groundbreaking discovery, uncovering the largest black hole jet known to humanity, measuring 23 million light years in length. This massive jet, equivalent to 140 galaxies connected end to end, has left researchers in awe.

Understanding Polypheon

Named after a giant in Greek legend, Polypheon is the largest black hole jet discovered to date. One light year is equal to 5.8 trillion miles, and 23 million light years is equivalent to 140 times the length of the Milky Way. Researchers believe that Polypheon was created during the Big Bang and has existed for approximately 6 billion years, which is half of the universe’s current lifetime.

Impact on the Universe

According to Martin Oy, a postdoctoral researcher at the California Institute of Technology, “This is a new record for the length of a black hole jet. The black hole jet could not only have a major impact on the evolution of its own galaxy but also on the magnetism of the space between galaxies and have a significant impact.”

How Black Holes Create Jets

Black holes swallow space debris that passes through them, and heated plasma can escape from the black hole to form high-energy jets. After the jet forms, it can split, get crushed by space turbulence, or weaken due to a lack of new material. However, the jets of supermassive black holes are particularly massive.

A New Era of Research

This discovery was published in the journal Nature on September 18. The images used were captured by the LOFAR radio telescope in the Netherlands and the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope in India. Researchers hope that by studying Polypheon, they can gain a deeper understanding of the universe’s initial formation process.
