Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Former President Kim Dae-jung’s Birth

The 100th anniversary of the birth of former President Kim Dae-jung, a champion of democracy and peace on the Korean Peninsula, has been marked with a series of events and exhibitions. On the 15th anniversary of his death, his unyielding will to fight against injustice and his wisdom that saw through the times are being reexamined.

A memorial exhibition was held in Jeonju to pay tribute to former President Kim, who dedicated his entire life to his work. The exhibition featured artworks that captured his spirit and legacy, including a painting that depicted his fierce gaze and upright posture, facing the absurd world.

The painting, created with ink and wash, stands against the chilling dictatorship, conveying the deep anguish of the deceased who stood on the side of democracy and the weak. The weight of former President Kim’s life is expressed in bold lines, drawing viewers into his story.

Citizens who want to follow in the footsteps of the deceased voluntarily planned the exhibition to give it more meaning. “If we approach it artistically, it becomes more natural,” said Lee Ye-rim, CEO of Art Resonance. “The intention is that you will miss and love President Kim Dae-jung.”

Events honoring former President Kim have been taking place in Jeollabuk-do since the beginning of this year. A photo exhibition containing affectionate images of Mrs. Lee Hee-ho was also opened, showcasing the couple’s love and commitment to democracy and peace.

Cho Jong-an, Chairman of the Gunsan Memorial Foundation, emphasized the importance of former President Kim’s legacy. “Acting conscience is actually the basis of our lives,” he said. “To play the role of a master, you have to have a very high sense of participation. In that sense, the spirit of Kim Dae-jung is needed.”

Even in the midst of the harsh times of dictatorship, former President Kim Dae-jung’s spirit shines brightly. He became a symbol of overcoming the IMF crisis and peace between the South and the North, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
