Passenger Car Catches Fire in Snow Mountain Tunnel
(Central News Agency reporter Wang Chaoyu, Yilan, 8) A passenger car caught fire in the 17.8-kilometer Snow Mountain Tunnel on the afternoon of the 8th, causing a two-way lane closure and blocking northbound traffic for 8 kilometers.
The National Highway Police received a report at 2:55 pm that a passenger vehicle was on fire in the outer lane of the 17.8-kilometer Snow Mountain Tunnel on the northbound National Highway 5. Personnel from the Pinglin Traffic Control Center were dispatched to close lanes in both directions.
The Snow Mountain Self-Defense Fire Brigade arrived at the scene at 3:30 p.m. and extinguished the fire at 3:13 p.m. According to preliminary information from the police, the driver of the minibus, a man named Liang, and a passenger, a woman, escaped on their own. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined by the police.
Police noted that two-way lanes of the relevant unit of the Joushan Tunnel were blocked for 8 km and the southbound direction for 7 km at 3:47 pm. After clearing the scene, two-way traffic was normalized around 4 pm.
