Unveiling the Pulse of the Nation: 2024 Urban Economic Census Takes a Deep Dive into Formal and Informal Sectors
Colombian Economy to be Counted in National Urban Economic Census
An ethnic-racial element is included to make the contribution of indigenous communities, Afro, Palenquera, Raizal and Roma to the popular economy obvious.
The Department of National Administrative Statistics (DANE) began the sweeping phase of the National Urban Economic Census (CENU), where approximately 8,000 census takers and supervisors will literally go to the streets of the entire country to count the Colombian economy.
“For the first time we integrated an ethnic-racial element in an Economic Census to make the role of indigenous, Afro-Colombian, Palenquera, Raizal and Roma communities in the Colombian economy evident. CENU 2024 will allow them to identify how their ancient and traditional knowledge is integrated into the economic activities of the country,” said Andrea Ramírez Pisco, deputy director of DANE.
In fact, to start the Sweep period of the Economic Census, the director of DANE placed the first ‘Census’ stamp on an economic unit of the almost 3.5 million establishments and street vendors that will be counted: commercial establishments, households with economic activities and street vendors in the urban areas of Colombia.
Progress by sector
Since the launch of the self-completion stage, on 4 June, almost 2,000 Transport companies have completed the digital form; as well as 2,600 companies and entities in the Public Administration and Defense sector and Compulsory Membership Social Security Schemes, Financial Services and Insurance, as well as Household Public Services (SAFP) which also met this requirement.
“The small, medium and large business sector began its collection work in September this year, with 30,000 companies from the manufacturing, trade and services industry that will answer the digital questionnaire,” added Piedad Urdinola, director of DANE.
