Unveiling the Rich Heritage of Mauritania: Preparations Underway for National Traditional Handicrafts Celebration
National Handicraft Days in Mauritania: Celebrating Traditional Crafts and Empowering Youth
Preparations are underway for the National Handicraft Days, scheduled to take place in Nouakchott from November 22 to 26 at the Olympic Complex.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Vocational Training, aims to promote traditional crafts and encourage young people to take ownership of their cultural heritage. According to the Mauritanian News Agency, the goal is to “celebrate traditional crafts and raise the interest of young people to continue the great legacy left by their ancestors.”
The Minister of Vocational Training, Industry and Traditional Crafts, Mohamed Maa El Ainine Ould Ayeh, has unveiled a new strategy for the sector. This includes establishing a national code for traditional crafts to preserve heritage, boost the economy, and drive development. Additionally, a national fund will be set up to support the industry.
Hawa Abu Moussa Diallo, Commissioner General of Exhibitions of the Ministry of Trade and Tourism and Head of the Organizing Committee for National Days, highlighted the challenges facing the traditional industry. These include globalization, limited access to modern markets, and a lack of knowledge about up-to-date sales techniques. These obstacles hinder young talents from showcasing their skills beyond Mauritania’s borders.
The National Handicraft Days promise to be an exciting event, showcasing the best of Mauritanian traditional crafts and providing a platform for young artisans to shine.
