Unveiling the Truth: Dr. Hawass Leads the Charge to Bring Nefertiti’s Iconic Head Back Home to Egypt
Egypt Demands Return of Queen Nefertiti’s Head from Germany
Egyptian archaeologist and former minister of antiquities Zahi Hawass has demanded that Germany return the head of pharaonic queen Nefertiti from the new museum in the capital Berlin to its ”homeland” Egypt, noting that it had been transferred to Germany illegally.
Hawass presented the document during the “Nefertiti Cultural Salon” event, which was held at the Center for Artistic Creativity in the Prince Taj Palace in central Cairo, affiliated with the Cultural Development Fund.
The former Minister of Antiquities confirmed that he will publish the document on his personal pages on social media for Egyptians and foreigners to see, which aims to participate in signing a petition for the Queen’s return to Egypt.
According to the text of the popular document, Hawass wrote, “I am writing on behalf of the Egyptians, and those who strongly support the return of our Egyptian heritage to their homeland, and I present a request to return the statue of Nefertiti, made of colored limestone, which is registered in the Berlin Museum under No. AM 21300.
He added, “This wonderful bust, unmatched in history for its historical and aesthetic value, is now in Germany, but it is time to return it to its homeland, Egypt.”
He concluded by saying, “We are announcing today that Egypt is requesting the return of the bust of Nefertiti. This is a national committee, not a government committee.”
Queen Nefertiti
Queen Nefertiti was the great royal wife of Akhenaten, ruler of Egypt between 1353 and 1336 BC and pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty.
Nefertiti lived for a short time after her husband’s death and helped Tutankhamun attain a high status during her husband’s reign. She was not only beautiful and attractive but also a powerful figure that men feared, and she had a prominent role in Akhenaten’s life.
Exodus from Egypt
German archaeologists led by Ludwig Burkhart found a statue of Nefertiti’s head on December 6, 1912, in the Amarna area of Minya Governorate in the city of Akhetaten, which King Akhenaten – Nefertiti’s husband - established as the capital of Egypt.
Archaeologist Hawass previously explained that the statue was smuggled out of Egypt through deception and disguise.
