Unwrapping the Legacy: Exclusive Souvenirs from the Iconic Nico Kasanda, as Told by Dr Nico
Nicolas Kasanda wa Mikalay: The Enduring Legacy of Dr. Nico
As the anniversary of Dr. Nico’s passing approaches, his music continues to inspire new generations of Afro descendants.
For those of us born on the eve or dawn of independence, our connection to Dr. Nico’s music is often indirect, passed down through the memories of our ancestors, fathers, mothers, aunts, and uncles. However, through their stories and testimonies, we have been able to attribute the significant contributions of Dr. Nico and his generation of musical artists to the building of a transnational, cross-border cultural identity in Africa.
Dr. Nico’s music, along with that of other legendary artists such as Charles Mwamba, Joseph Kabasele, Franco Luambo, Ntesa Dalienst, Franklin Boukaka, Boubacar Demba Camara, Bella Bellow, Abeti Poor, Lucie Eyenga, and Kambeta Andrew, has had a profound impact on our lives. Their songs have inspired our parents to give us names like Angèle, Angéline, Chantal, Brigitte, Jaria, and Delia, and have influenced our childhood and adolescence in many ways.
I remember as a child, my mother would often send me to buy rice from a trader near our neighborhood, and the Kiri Kiri music of the African Fiesta orchestra would fill the air, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. Years later, I would find myself whistling the same tune whenever I passed by the same spot, a testament to the enduring power of Dr. Nico’s music.
Dr. Nico’s legacy extends far beyond his own music, however. He was a pioneer in the development of African jazz, and his influence can be heard in the music of countless other artists. As the Haitian writer Jacques Roumain wrote, “Oh, sure, one day every man goes to earth, but life itself is a thread that does not break, that does not get lost, do you know why? Because every Negro during his existence ties a knot: this is the work he has accomplished and this is what makes life alive throughout the centuries: man’s usefulness on earth.”
As we reflect on Dr. Nico’s life and legacy, we are reminded of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and passing it down to future generations. His music continues to inspire and uplift us, and his impact on the world of African jazz is immeasurable.
