Upcoming Irish Art Auctions: Highlights & Notable Works for 2023
The Irish art auction season begins on November 26 at 6 PM. deVeres Art Auctioneers in Dublin will hold its first live auction since 2019 at their Kildare Street offices.
Rory Guthrie, the director of deVeres, encourages attendees to reserve seats in advance due to expected high turnout. He highlights that 25% of the auction’s paintings are by female artists, including Camille Souter, Mary Swanzy, Letitia Hamilton, and others.
Notable pieces in the auction include:
- The Red Bogs by Camille Souter (€3,000-€5,000)
- Winged Figure sculpture by Sonja Landweer (€3,000-€5,000)
- My Father’s Garden II by Camille Souter (€12,000-€16,000)
- Roadside Grasses by Norah McGuinness (€15,000-€20,000)
- The Bird Catcher by Mary Swanzy (€10,000-€15,000)
Guthrie notes that works by male artists, such as Rescued by Martin Gale (€10,000-€15,000) and Footbridge at Seapoint by Donald Teskey (€20,000-€30,000), are also featured.
The auction will include celebrated artists like Jack B Yeats, Roderic O’Conor, and Louis le Brocquy. O’Conor’s Breton Farmstead with Haystack (c1892) is estimated at €180,000-€220,000.
In Belfast, Ross’s auction will offer over 140 lots from the Grant Fine Art Gallery, including works by various artists. Bidding runs from November 27 to December 4, featuring:
- Mournes & Dundrum by George Rowlett (£1,500-£2,000)
- Cushendun by Hector McDonnell (£150-£200)
- Hawthorne by the Roadside by Len Tabner (£1,000-£1,200)
Margaret and Gerry Grant’s gallery closed in 2022 after 50 years in Newcastle, Co Down.
Additionally, the Dublin Simon Community will host “A Community of Hope: Artists for Dublin Simon.” This auction runs from November 28 to December 10 and includes works by notable artists like Imelda May.
Lastly, the Claregalway Castle Antique and Vintage Fair takes place this weekend, showcasing 20 dealers.
Upcoming auction highlights include:
- Head of Samuel Beckett by Louis le Brocquy (€100,000-€150,000)
- O’Connell Bridge, Dublin by Jack B Yeats (£500,000)
- Art by Eileen Agar and Sir William Orpen with varying estimates and hammer prices.
