Dog Dies After Being Moved to Economy Class on Flight
A man who booked a first-class seat on a plane for his dog has spoken out after the dog died following a request from flight attendants to move to economy class.
Michael Contillo, a resident of San Francisco, USA, shared his story with NBC News. He explained that he had purchased a first-class ticket for his dog, Ash, to provide more space and reduce interactions with people. However, when flight attendants asked him to move to economy class, Ash became anxious and showed signs of distress, ultimately leading to his death.
Contillo has filed a lawsuit against Alaska Airlines, alleging breach of contract, negligence, and emotional distress. According to the complaint, Contillo had previously flown with his dogs, Ash and Cora, from San Francisco to New York without incident. However, on the return flight, flight attendants requested that Contillo and his father move to economy class, citing safety concerns.
Contillo expressed concerns about the safety of the dogs in economy class, citing the limited space and proximity to other passengers. Despite his concerns, he eventually complied with the flight attendants’ request. Upon arrival in San Francisco, Contillo found Ash’s body in a state of rigor mortis.
Alaska Airlines has not responded to requests for comment. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that breeds with short muzzles, such as pugs and bulldogs, fly in the cabin due to the risk of breathing problems during flights.
Contillo described his dog, Ash, as “like a son to me, who didn’t have children.” He expressed disappointment and frustration with the airline’s handling of the situation.
