Veteran Sumire Namikata defeats 4th seed and advances to second round of singles
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) women’s tour lower-level tournament, GS YUASA OPEN 2024 ITF World Tennis Tour W35 Kyoto, is underway in Japan. The main tournament, held at the Kyoto City Gymnasium, Kataoka Arena Kyoto, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, features a total prize money of $25,000 and is played on indoor carpet courts.
On the second day of the main tournament, the remaining eight first round matches in the women’s singles and four first round matches in the women’s doubles were held. In singles, the first seed Tiffany Lemaitre (France), the fifth seed Cao Chiayi (Taiwan), Jiang Ying (China), Kobayashi Honoka (Hashimoto Sangyo), Liu Yanni (China), wild card (sponsor’s recommendation) Nishimoto Seira (Top Run), Namikata Junri (Free), and qualifying winner Negishi Yuzuha (Inuzuka Sports Planning) advanced to the second round.
Notably, the fourth seed Punning Kobapicked (Thailand) lost 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 to Namikata, formerly ranked 105th in the world, and was down-seeded in the first match. In doubles, third seeds Nagata Anri/Yamazaki Ikumi (both Shimadzu Corporation), fourth seeds Kinoshita Haruyuki (Team Rise)/Saigo Yukina (free agent), Koseki Michika (Hashimoto Sangyo Holdings)/Jang, and Kang Na-hyun (Korea)/Morimoto Nagisa (SEEKERs TENNIS TEAM) advanced to the final eight.
The schedule for the next day includes seven second round matches of women’s singles, starting from 10:00, and four women’s doubles quarterfinals, starting from 13:00 onwards.
